As a part of the exhibition BOYS BOYS BOYS with Lin Zhi peng aka No. 223 July 15 - July 29, 2023 Migrant Bird Space Berlin -- Artist Talk & Tour: Melissa Steckbauer & Ewa Majewska July 27 Expounding on themes of affect, intimacy, and embodiment as we move beyond gendered frameworks "Melissa Steckbauer's work, explores how she shows surfaces as containing depths, both: within them as well as their metaphoric and metonimic "others". She invites us to share intimacy and closeness, with the cuts in paper reminding one of the vulnerability and harm accompanying any such radical effort as proximity and/or affect. Visiting these vulnerable spaces with the artist is a genuine pleasure - one more uncomfortable affect, next to humiliation and shame that also participate in our explorations of being together, intimately. Patriarchal philosophy offers notions of surface and seduction, which still participate in the hunt and combatant vocabulary of the West. Melissa's photographs invite us to explore the Other ('s) side of experiencing connections. Not necessarily a happy one, but definitely one beyond the normative.
